Technology Radar Block
Radar chart visualisation for technology assessment. Items placed in rings (adopt, trial, assess, hold) and quadrants (techniques, tools, platforms, languages).
The Technology Radar block renders items on a radar chart divided into concentric rings and quadrant sectors. Each item (a technology, technique, or practice) is placed at a position that reflects both its category and its current adoption status. This format is widely used for communicating technology strategy across engineering teams.
When to Use
Block Properties
| Property | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Items | Yes | List of technology items to place on the radar |
| Item Name | Yes | Display name of the technology or practice |
| Ring | Yes | Adoption ring: Adopt, Trial, Assess, or Hold |
| Quadrant | Yes | Category quadrant: Techniques, Tools, Platforms, or Languages and Frameworks |
| Movement | No | Direction indicator: new, moved in, moved out, or unchanged |
| Description | No | Short description shown on hover or in the item detail panel |
| Ring Labels | No | Custom labels for the four rings (defaults: Adopt, Trial, Assess, Hold) |
| Quadrant Labels | No | Custom labels for the four quadrants |
Layout Behaviour
The radar is rendered as a circular chart divided into four equal quadrants and four concentric rings. Items are plotted as numbered dots within their ring and quadrant. A legend maps each number to the item name. When multiple items share the same ring and quadrant, they are spaced to avoid overlap.
Radar vs Other Visualisations
| Visualisation | Best For |
|---|---|
| Technology Radar | Positioning items on two dimensions: category and adoption status |
| Comparison Table | Detailed feature-by-feature evaluation of a small number of options |
| Vendor Assessment | Weighted scoring and ranking of vendor products |
