How to Document Architecture Transitions

Goal

Model a multi-phase architecture transition using lifecycle tagging. Mark elements as active, planned, or deprecated to represent current state, interim phases, and target state. This works with both standard diagrams and graph diagrams.

Understanding Lifecycle States

Step 1: Document the Current State

Step 2: Stamp a Baseline Version

Step 3: Add Planned Elements for Phase 1

Step 4: Mark Legacy Elements for Deprecation

Step 5: Migrate Downstream References

Step 6: Track Progress

Step 7: Repeat for Additional Phases

For Phase 2 and beyond, repeat Steps 3 through 6: add new planned elements, deprecate outgoing elements, migrate references, and track progress. Each phase builds on the previous one.
