Mind Map Mode

Use Mind Map mode for idea exploration with minimal constraints. Capture thoughts quickly with keyboard-driven editing and structural navigation.

Mind Map mode is for idea exploration when you do not yet know the final structure. The interface is minimal, letting you focus on capturing thoughts quickly. Properties, cardinality, and relationship labels are hidden, leaving just nodes and connections.

When to Use Mind Map Mode

Brainstorming
Sessions where speed matters more than precision
Project Planning
Work breakdown and task organisation
Feature Exploration
Before detailed design
Note-Taking
Idea organisation and capture
Meeting Capture
Discussion mapping in real-time
Early-Stage Thinking
When structure emerges over time

Creating Your First Mind Map

Building Structure with Keyboard

Mind Map mode is optimised for keyboard-driven editing:

KeyAction
TabCreate child node (branch down)
EnterCreate sibling node (same level, after)
Shift+EnterCreate sibling node (same level, before)
F2Edit current node label
DeleteRemove node and reconnect children to parent

Structural Navigation

In Mind Map mode, arrow keys navigate the tree structure rather than spatial positions:

KeyAction
Arrow UpMove to parent node
Arrow DownMove to first child
Arrow LeftMove to previous sibling
Arrow RightMove to next sibling

Radial Layout

Mind Map mode uses a radial layout bias that organises nodes in a circular pattern around the root. The root node is typically the first node you create, or any node with no incoming edges.

Minimal Interface

Mind Map mode hides features that add cognitive overhead during exploration:

Properties Panel
Hidden
Key Role Indicators

Relationship Labels

Cardinality

Validation
Only structural (no property warnings)
Focus
Ideas and connections only

Converting to Other Modes

When your ideas are clearer and you want to add more structure:

Tips for Effective Mind Mapping

Clear Centre
Start with a clear central concept
Short Labels
Use 2-4 words per node
Branch First
Branch first, organise later
Pin Important
Pin important nodes to anchor the layout
Adjust Spacing
Use the spacing slider if nodes overlap
Relax Layout
Press R if the layout becomes tangled
